Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, February 20, 2018.

Summary

Nationally, the number of deaths returned to within the usual range of fluctuation across all age groups (particularly among people aged 15–64 and those aged 65 and older) during weeks 4 (January 22–28) and 5 (January 29–February 4).Over the period from December 4, 2017, to January 28, 2018, excess mortality across all age groups is estimated at 8%, or approximately 7,800 additional deaths (estimate extrapolated to the whole of France). When analyzed by age group, the excess is estimated at +10.5% among those aged 15–64 and +7.4% among those aged 65 and older. At the regional level, Occitanie continues to report significantly higher numbers than expected in Week 4 (all ages and among those aged 15–64) and in Week 5 (among those aged 15–64). In all other regions, numbers returned to within the usual fluctuation range as early as Week 4 (or even Week 3 for some regions). The excess mortality rates for all ages combined in these three regions are estimated (for the period from December 4, 2017, to January 28, 2018) at +12% in Île-de-France, +13.2% in PACA, and +15% in Occitanie. At the European level, among the countries participating in the EuroMomo network (www.euromomo.eu), a clear increase in mortality was also noted starting in December 2017, both among those aged 15–64 and among those aged 65 and older (Figure 5). This increase mainly affected Portugal, Italy, Spain, and Scotland. These initial observations should be interpreted with caution, as the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in transmission. As a reminder, these analyses are based on vital statistics data and do not contain any information on the medical causes of death. According to data from electronic certification, 1,811 deaths were recorded during the 7th week of 2018 (February 12–18).
