Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, August 9, 2016.

Summary

Nationally, in week 29 (July 18–24, 2016), the observed all-cause mortality trend was higher than expected across all age groups, particularly among people aged 65–84 and those aged 85 and older. It slightly exceeded the upper limit of the fluctuation range. However, this observation varies by region. A higher-than-expected mortality trend was observed in 5 regions (Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Pays-de-la-Loire, Hauts-de-France, and Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine), with the trend being most pronounced in Brittany. During this week, a heat wave was observed. Given the usual delays in data transmission and the context of school vacations and public holidays, the observed mortality figures are still incomplete, and it is not possible to precisely quantify the increase in mortality at this stage. Caution is therefore advised when interpreting these observations. A final assessment is planned for the end of the summer.
