The November 2015 Paris attacks: Impact on parent–child relationships and on the children of professionals and volunteers who came to the aid of the victims

Introduction: Following the attacks in Paris and Saint-Denis in November 2015, Santé publique France launched the November 2015 Post-Attack Public Health Survey (ESPA November 13), open to those directly affected as well as to professionals and volunteers (respondents) who came to the aid of civilians. Among the survey questions, one focuses on the impact of the attacks on parent–child relationships and on children. This article discusses the responders’ answers. Method: Conducted online, the survey took place in two phases in 2016 and 2020. It consisted of closed-ended and open-ended questions, including the question of interest to this article: "If you have children, can you tell us whether you think the experience you went through had an effect on them, or on your relationship with them? Can you explain?" ." The responses were analyzed thematically, comparing the answers collected in 2016 and 2020. Results: Five main themes emerged, showing that some of the participants observed no change in their children or in their relationships with them. Others identified factors of psychological contagion that made them question their ability to protect their children. Parent–child relationships have changed, and some children have developed significant anxiety about their parents or even various disorders. Conclusion: The attacks had a psychological impact on some children and altered attachment bonds, highlighting a strong sense of insecurity among family members, which risks hindering the children’s process of becoming independent.
