Suicide: Understanding to Prevent. National, Local, and Community Perspectives. Second Report, February 2016
With nearly 10,000 deaths per year and more than 200,000 suicide attempts, suicidal behavior remains a major concern in France. In light of these alarming figures, the National Suicide Observatory, established in 2013, continues its work to better understand and prevent this public health crisis. In this second report, the Observatory focuses on highlighting data and prevention efforts carried out at both the national and local levels by government agencies and nonprofit organizations. It also reviews recent findings regarding the role played by risk and protective factors in suicide. Finally, it presents the latest available statistics and a follow-up on the recommendations outlined in the first report. These are supplemented by new perspectives and avenues for reflection. Published in November 2014, the first report provided an overview of current knowledge on suicide by describing information systems, the national action program, and interventions targeting specific populations such as people in prisons or farmers. It also helped identify gaps in research, which led to the launch of a call for research proposals in February 2015.
