Suicidal behavior: prevalence of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. Santé publique France Barometer: results from the 2024 edition

In 2024, one in twenty adults aged 18 to 79 (5.2%) reported having had suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months, 0.4% reported having attempted suicide in the past 12 months, and 5.4% reported having attempted suicide at some point in their lives. Women, young adults, and people in precarious or isolated situations are the most affected. One in ten women with precarious employment contracts (fixed-term contracts, temporary assignments, part-time work, apprenticeship contracts) reports having attempted suicide at some point in their lives. Men in the white-collar occupational category are most affected by suicidal thoughts. The Hauts-de-France and Grand Est regions have the highest prevalence of suicidal behavior.
