Opinion of the High Council for Public Health on the impact of COVID-19 on mental health
The health crisis that has been unfolding since March 2020 has highlighted the French population’s limited understanding of mental health, the lack of prevention and promotion efforts focused on this aspect of health, as well as a lack of coordination and clarity regarding available support services. In 2021, at the request of the Directorate General for Health (DGS), the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) conducted a study on the mental health consequences of the health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, submitted in September 2021, was presented at the Mental Health and Psychiatry Conference. This summary presents a selection of structural recommendations, the operational details of which are outlined in the HCSP’s advisory opinion. In it, the HCSP advocates for a comprehensive approach based on four key concepts: working together, proximity, doing no harm, and providing resources.
