Dealing with COVID-19: Children and adolescents show resilience when supported by their families, schools, or professionals [Interview]
Regarding the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, Angèle Consoli points out that all age groups have been affected, but the 11- to 14-year-old age group has been particularly hard hit. Early adolescence is a period of heightened vulnerability, and middle school students rely heavily on school for social connections. The health crisis has also compounded the hospital crisis that child and adolescent psychiatry departments were already facing. Due to the increased workload, many adolescents were hospitalized in adult psychiatric units—which are “less suited to their age”—lacking educators or teachers and specific activities—and the youngest were hospitalized in pediatric wards (some with liaison psychiatry teams, a system insufficient for their care, etc.). There has been a “loss of opportunity” regarding the quality of care provided. However, during the pandemic, these departments received additional resources that made it possible to increase the volume of consultations.
