COVID-19: Higher Hospital Mortality Rates Among People with Schizophrenia [Interview]
Guillaume Fond’s study highlights disparities in access to care for people with schizophrenia at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic—from March to June 2020—which resulted in higher in-hospital mortality rates among this population compared to the general population. Among the explanatory factors explored: due to the saturation of intensive care units during this period and the limited number of ventilators, the "triage" that took place had an impact on the survival chances of patients with schizophrenia. This excess mortality was observed in six other countries studied. Among his recommendations, Guillaume Fond advocates, first and foremost, for better training of hospital staff so that people with mental health conditions are not treated differently from others, whether in relation to COVID-19 or other conditions.
