Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of May 29, 2019.

Key Points

  • Since January 1, 2019, 1,363 cases of measles have been reported (compared to 2,350 cases during the same period in 2018), including 420 (31%) hospitalizations (17 in intensive care), 101 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).

  • The circulation of the measles virus has intensified, with 125 cases in week 21, and between 110 and 120 cases reported during weeks 18, 19, and 20, compared to 75 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.

  • 80 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.

  • 84% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 876 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).

  • The persistence of nosocomial cluster outbreaks underscores the importance of keeping healthcare workers’ vaccination statuses up to date.
