Drug sensitivity of imported Plasmodium falciparum malaria in France in 1996
The National Reference Center for Malaria Drug Susceptibility (CNRNP) and the Institute of Tropical Medicine of the French Armed Forces Health Service (IMTSSA) monitor the drug susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum malaria imported into France. Their annual report describes trends in in vitro resistance based on the origin of the strains, enabling the adaptation of chemoprophylactic and therapeutic recommendations. 384 P. falciparum isolates were sent to the CNRCP and the IMTSSA in 1996, originating from malaria cases diagnosed in 57 hospital departments across France. The data indicate that in 1996, chloroquine resistance in malaria remained stable for strains imported from Africa, which remains the primary continent of infection for travelers.
