Public Health Bulletin on Alcohol in Corsica. January 2020.
Key points
The only data on alcohol consumption in Corsica pertain to 17-year-olds (Escapad survey). Among this group, the prevalence of experimental alcohol use is the highest among French regions (94%). Similarly, the prevalence of repeated heavy drinking episodes is one of the highest in France, at 21%. However, the prevalence of regular use, again among those under 17, does not differ from the national average.
Emergency room visits directly related to alcohol accounted for 0.82% of all emergency room visits in the region (vs. 1.38% for France as a whole).
In Corsica, the age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 person-years over the 2007–2016 period for cancers of the lips, mouth, and pharynx (LBP) on the one hand, and of the esophagus on the other, are not different from the national level.
Mortality among women for these same cancers, as well as for laryngeal cancer, also did not differ from the national level.
Mortality among men from laryngeal cancer was also not different from the national average. However, these rates were lower than the national level for LBP and esophageal cancers.
The age-standardized mortality rates for the main diseases directly related to alcohol were 6.1 among women and 36.8 among men per 100,000 person-years. They were more than 20% lower than the national rates.
