In 2021, 16.4% of adults aged 18–75 reported having heavy drinking episodes monthly.
This proportion is not significantly different from the national average (16.5%). This proportion has not changed significantly since 2017.
Exceeding guidelines for lower-risk drinking
In 2021, 21.1% of adults aged 18 to 75 reported exceeding the guidelines for lower-risk drinking. This proportion is not significantly different from the national level (22%).
This proportion was significantly higher among men and significantly lower among those in the lowest income brackets.
Emergency room visits directly related to alcohol
In 2023, 15,145 emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were recorded, whereas in 2017, this number stood at 17,464.
The proportion of emergency department visits directly related to alcohol was also decreasing. The year 2020, which was atypical due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the overall decline in emergency department use, showed a higher proportion of such visits but a lower number of emergency department visits compared to 2019.
In the region, the departments with the highest rates of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var.
