Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of May 30, 2017.

Over the past week in the region:

The spell of summer temperatures last weekend had several consequences: - An increase in consultations for insect bites (SOS Médecins Nantes) since Thursday, May 25. This phenomenon is linked to the early emergence of Aedes caspius in the Loire estuary, followed by a migration toward Nantes driven by westerly winds, and then the population’s outdoor exposure during a long, sunny weekend. These mosquito bite outbreaks are more commonly observed in late August in the Nantes metropolitan area. - An increase in SOS Médecins consultations and emergency room visits for heatstroke, particularly on Saturday, May 27, with temperatures exceeding 30°C.- A sharp increase in consultations for asthma attacks via SOS Médecins on Sunday, May 28, following thunderstorms and heavy rains during this period of grass pollen release (particularly ryegrass). This phenomenon was previously observed in June 2013 in Nantes.

Information on pollen risks is available on the websites of the Pollinarium sentinel stations (Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Angers, and Laval) (http://www.airpl.org/Pollens/pollinariums-sentinelles) and the National Aerobiological Monitoring Network (RNSA) (http://www.pollens.fr/docs/vigilance.html).
