Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 9, 2013.
Over the past week in the region:
A combination of bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, and flu outbreaks has led to a surge in emergency department visits for infants and the elderly, well above alert thresholds, despite a slight improvement over the past week. No impact on mortality. Moderate influenza outbreak with a predominance of influenza A viruses observed by the two SOS Médecins associations over the past 4 weeks and by the unified Grog/Sentinelle network over the past 2 weeks; 10 cases of severe influenza have been hospitalized in intensive care in the region since early December. An increase in the gastroenteritis outbreak over the past week and a very significant rise in GEA outbreaks in nursing homes in the region over the past two weeks. A new norovirus variant has been identified at the European level and may be responsible for this outbreak, which is more severe than last year’s.Decline in the bronchiolitis outbreak, though a significant number of bronchiolitis cases are still being seen in emergency departments and hospitalized at Nantes University Hospital (7th week of the outbreak with nearly 500 emergency department visits and 250 hospitalizations since week 47). A marked improvement is expected this week.
