Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 12, 2016.
Over the past week in the region:
There has been a sharp decrease in cases of bronchiolitis seen in the emergency department at Nantes University Hospital, down by half compared to week 53. Activity levels at Nantes University Hospital and SOS Médecins for bronchiolitis are just above the thresholds. This decline has also been observed in the number of emergency department visits by infants under 1 year of age (below the threshold).
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) isolates are decreasing despite several cases of infection diagnosed in adults at Angers University Hospital. Influenza viruses remain rare. Nationally, there is a predominance of influenza B virus among the first cases of infection seen in primary care.
A consistently high number of pneumonia diagnoses is being observed among older adults in emergency departments and by SOS Médecins. There is also an increase in emergency department visits by people aged 75 and older.
An initial increase in cases of gastroenteritis seen by SOS Médecins, but still below the epidemic threshold. Several clusters of gastroenteritis cases have been reported in nursing homes. The National Reference Center for Enteric Viruses reports an increase in a new norovirus genotype (GII.17), replacing the previous GII.4. This new genotype was responsible for major outbreaks in China and Japan in 2014–15.
