Group therapeutic education program for children with asthma in Nantes.
A group therapeutic education program was launched at Nantes University Hospital for children with asthma in 1997. The primary objective of this study was to conduct a formative evaluation of the program and compare the results with existing data. The study was offered to 99 families of children with asthma. A written and oral evaluation was conducted with parents and children following the education sessions. The retrospective questionnaires included a survey of opinions, knowledge, and behaviors post-intervention. The observation focused on the skills and experiences of parents and children. The study included 21 families. The majority of the children, aged 7 to 11, had asthma requiring maintenance therapy. All parents and children were satisfied with their visit to the “Espace du Souffle.” An overall improvement in knowledge, skills, biomedical parameters, and self-reported health behaviors was noted. However, gaps persisted regarding the clinical signs of an asthma attack, participation in sports, and the use of corticosteroids. There was also poorly managed anxiety among parents during asthma attacks. The oral assessment revealed parental anxiety that was not apparent in the questionnaires. This therapeutic education program appears to be beneficial across various parameters (knowledge, attitudes, and reported behaviors). Furthermore, this type of educational program allows for consideration of aspects of the disease that are often overlooked during a standard medical consultation, particularly family anxiety, the significance of which was confirmed by this study.
