Assessment of environmental exposure to asbestos as part of a health risk assessment in Andouillé, Mayenne

The hamlet of Rochefort, in the municipality of Andouillé (Mayenne), is built around a former asbestos processing plant that operated until 1952. On the industrial site, which has been renovated using traditional methods, asbestos-containing waste and asbestos fibers remain, which could become airborne in an area designated for residential and tourist use. Public access to such a site led the DDASS to consider the need to recommend preventive measures, particularly to limit the number of people exposed and thus prevent the onset of diseases linked to the presence of asbestos on the site. From a practical standpoint, the questions therefore arose as to whether it was appropriate to suspend the village’s development and restrict public access to the area around the former spinning mill. Given the current state of the industrial site, it does not seem appropriate to restrict such access. The presence of asbestos-containing waste on the site should nevertheless prompt caution regarding any potential construction work. While exposure to asbestos inside buildings has been the subject of numerous regulations and debates, little attention has been paid to outdoor exposure to date, which gives this approach a unique character.
