HIV and Bacterial STIs in Réunion. 2023 Report.
Key Points
HIV Infections and AIDS
HIV Surveillance
HIV lab participation is 100%: in Réunion, all laboratories participated
Overall coverage of the DO is estimated at 92% in 2023 and is down very slightly compared to 2022
HIV testing (LaboVIH / SNDS / VIHTest): after a decline in 2020, as seen nationwide, testing continues the upward trend that began in 2021. In Réunion, the rate is 123.6 per 1,000 people, higher than the rate for mainland France (75 per 1,000 inhabitants) (excluding the Île-de-France region)
The testing rate is higher among women than men, except among those aged 50 and older
The highest testing rates are found among women aged 25–49 (264.6 per 1,000 inhabitants) and women aged 15–24 (250.3 per 1,000 inhabitants), far ahead of men aged 25–49 (152.7 per 1,000 inhabitants)
HIV Diagnosis (DO)
In 2023, the rate of HIV serology tests performed per 1,000 inhabitants rose sharply. The positivity rate remained stable
The number of HIV-positive cases detected in 2023 is up compared to 2022 (57 vs. 40)
HIV incidence and size of the undiagnosed population
The latest incidence estimates date back to 2018. In Réunion, incidence fluctuated between 2012 and 2021, in line with fluctuations observed among men who have sex with men (MSM) born in France. Between 2021 and 2022, incidence in Réunion declined slightly. For 2023, the wide confidence interval does not allow us to speak of an increase despite the trend. In Réunion, in 2023, the number of people living with HIV who are undiagnosed is estimated at 119 [95% CI: 68–170]; the majority are heterosexuals born in France.
AIDS Diagnosis
After a decline through 2021, the number of AIDS diagnoses has been rising since 2021, contrary to national trends. The vast majority of AIDS diagnoses were made in people who were previously unaware of their HIV-positive status
Bacterial STIs: Chlamydia trachomatis, gonorrhea, and syphilis
In general, STIs are detected and diagnosed more frequently in Réunion than in mainland France.
SNDS Screening
In Réunion, STI screening remains stable or is slightly on the rise.
Screening is far more common among women than men (except for syphilis screening among those over 50).
SNDS Diagnosis
STI diagnosis rates are stable. STIs continue to be diagnosed more frequently than in mainland France (nearly twice as often).
Chlamydia infections are diagnosed equally among both sexes in those under 25. Beyond this age group, they affect men much more than women. The trend is reversed for gonorrhea diagnoses, which affect women more than men (except among those over 50, where this diagnosis is rare and equally common for both sexes). Syphilis is diagnosed more frequently in women under 25 than in men. In other age groups, it is more common in men.
SurCeGIDD
In 2023, 2 of the 3 CeGIDDs in Réunion contributed to surveillance.
