Health Impact of the Strike in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of January 6, 2012.
Between September 27 and November 9, 2011, the island of Mayotte was rocked by a major social movement that had a significant impact on the daily lives of the island’s residents. Strikers protested the high cost of living through demonstrations and roadblocks across the island. The movement was suspended on November 10, followed by the signing of a crisis resolution agreement on December 20, 2011. In total, the crisis lasted 44 consecutive days. Social unrest, difficulties in obtaining food supplies, fuel shortages, and the reorganization of healthcare services in both hospitals and private practices were all societal disruptions that may have had a direct and/or indirect impact on the health of the population of Mayotte.
