Accidents in Daily Life on Réunion Island, 2010–2018: Results from the EPAC Survey
Introduction - Since 2005, the Centre hospitalier Ouest Réunion (CHOR) has participated in data collection for the ongoing survey on accidents in daily life (Epac), coordinated by Santé publique France. This is the only survey that provides a continuous record of accidents in daily life in France over time. CHOR is one of four public hospitals on Réunion Island, accounting for nearly 30% of emergency department visits on the island. CHOR is the only overseas hospital participating in this survey. Methods - An analysis of emergency department visits for accidents of daily life (AcVC) treated by the CHOR emergency department between 2010 and 2018 was conducted to describe these cases and detect any changes in their distribution over time. After adjusting for completeness and extrapolating CHOR data to the entire island, the characteristics of AcVCs in Réunion were compared with national data from the EPAC survey, and the local specificities identified during the study period were compared with those found in the 2010 analysis of EPAC survey data collected in Réunion between 2005 and 2009. Results - The incidence rate over the study period is estimated at 5.1 strokes per 100 inhabitants on the island, which corresponds to approximately 120 emergency department visits per day for strokes across the entire island. This rate is identical to that calculated for the 2005–2009 period. The overrepresentation of men is more pronounced than in France as a whole (sex ratio of 1.6 versus 1.3). Young people under the age of 20 are the most affected (48%). Strokes most often occur at home (59% versus 51% nationally), and falls are the most common cause (with no significant difference between Réunion and France as a whole, 61% versus 57%). Certain accidents specific to Réunion, such as stonefish stings, particularly affect tourists, accounting for 23% of acute cardiovascular events in this population group. Conclusion - These results confirm the trends observed in 2010 and provide updated knowledge that can be used to implement prevention measures specific to Réunion.
