Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 23, 2012.

Highlight: New Midi-Pyrénées Health Surveillance Bulletin (BVS) – SurSaUD® Special Edition

Since 2004, the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has been operating a surveillance system called SurSaUD® (Health Surveillance of Emergency Room Visits and Deaths) based on three sources of information: data from emergency departments participating in the Oscour® network (Organization for Coordinated Emergency Surveillance), activity data from SOS Médecins associations, and mortality data from INSEE. The objectives of this surveillance system are to generate alerts and to help measure and describe a public health situation during exceptional or seasonal health events.

In Midi-Pyrénées, this system is managed by the Cire in collaboration with the Midi-Pyrénées Emergency Observatory (ORUMiP) and the SOS Médecins 31 association.

This week, a special health surveillance bulletin (BVS) dedicated to the SurSaUD® surveillance system in Midi-Pyrénées was published. This bulletin illustrates, through concrete examples, the system’s utility at the regional level, as well as the quality of the information transmitted. As our goal is to improve the representativeness of our regional epidemiological analyses, we hope that these informational materials will encourage emergency departments that have not yet joined the system to participate, and will improve the quality of the information provided by participating facilities.
