Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of April 10, 2015.
End of the Flu Epidemic: Nationwide, all indicators have returned to baseline levels. In private practice, according to the national surveillance network, the incidence rate of flu-like illness was 61 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from recent weeks. SOS Médecin calls for influenza/influenza-like illness were down, with numbers once again close to those of the previous two years. In hospitals, emergency department activity for influenza declined in week 14, with figures returning to levels identical to those of 2013 and 2014.Since the start of surveillance, the majority of identified influenza viruses have been type A(H3N2) (55%). In intensive care units, 1,540 severe cases have been reported since November 1, 2014. The majority of these individuals had a risk factor for severe influenza, and the case fatality rate is 15% (232 deaths). In week 14, all-cause mortality returned to levels close to expected values for both all ages combined and by age group. Since the start of the epidemic in week 3, winter mortality has been 17% higher than the expected mortality calculated over the previous 8 years, representing an estimated excess of 12,700 deaths. In Midi-Pyrénées, indicators continue to decline or remain stable. The number of consultations for influenza/flu-like illness with SOS Médecin physicians continued to decline in week 14. In hospitals, the number of emergency department visits for influenza remained stable over the past week. Since the start of surveillance, 83 severe cases of influenza have been reported to the InVS (Cire Midi-Pyrénées).
