Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of October 3, 2014.
Key Points
Vector-borne diseases: Since the start of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, 160 reports of clinically suggestive cases of either disease have been received by the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Health Agency (ARS). Of these, 69 were confirmed as chikungunya and 19 as dengue. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area (imported cases). To date, no locally acquired cases have been reported in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Hospital and medical activity in the region: In week 2014-40, there was an increase in visits or consultations at SOS Médecins clinics in the region (Nîmes and Perpignan) involving children under 15 years of age. Main diagnoses: nasopharyngitis, gastroenteritis, and otitis.
Syndromic clusters monitored (Oscour® and SOS Médecins data): Gastroenteritis: there was an increase in SOS Médecins visits and consultations regarding gastroenteritis (+39% across all age groups and even +50% among adults aged 15 to 74); this trend was not observed in emergency departments.
Resumption of the surveillance season for clustered cases of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and gastroenteritis (GE) in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) starting October 1.
