Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of October 16, 2014.

Key Points

  • Vector-borne diseases: Since the start of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, 167 reports of clinically suggestive cases of either disease have been received by the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Health Agency (ARS). Of these, 71 were confirmed as chikungunya and 22 as dengue. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area (imported cases). To date, no locally acquired cases have been reported in Languedoc-Roussillon.

  • Hospital and medical activity in the region: since week 2014-40, there has been an increase in visits or consultations at the region’s SOS Médecins clinics (Nîmes and Perpignan) involving children under 15 years of age. Main diagnoses: nasopharyngitis, gastroenteritis, and otitis.

  • Gastroenteritis: the SOS Médecins association in Perpignan reports a slight increase in activity related to gastroenteritis in week 2014-41 (+27% compared to week 2014-40, and even +36% among adults aged 15 to 74), a trend not observed by the Nîmes association. However, case numbers remain lower than those observed in week 2014-39. No particular trend is evident in the emergency department data.

  • Bronchiolitis: Data from emergency departments report a few cases of bronchiolitis. Case numbers are similar to those observed during this time of year in previous seasons.
