Hospital Activity Monitoring: Over the Christmas weekend and the following Monday, the number of emergency room visits increased significantly across all departments, particularly among children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older. These increases led to a rise in hospitalizations in the Aude, Lozère, and Pyrénées-Orientales departments. In addition, the number of emergency medical service (Samu) calls also rose sharply on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Monitoring of seasonal illnesses:

  • bronchiolitis: in the region, the number of cases diagnosed in emergency departments decreased slightly in week 51 of 2011. However, the number of cases remains high, while the number of cases in France continues to decline;

  • flu-like syndromes: although data from the Grog and Sentinelles networks show a slight increase in cases nationwide, flu activity remains low. For those aged 75 and older, SOS Médecins data show a small increase (+12% compared to the previous week). In Languedoc-Roussillon, visits to emergency departments for this condition remain infrequent,

  • Gastroenteritis: The number of gastroenteritis diagnoses made in emergency departments and by doctors from the SOS Médecins network continues to rise, both regionally and nationally.
