Regionalization of Surveillance for Syphilis and Other STIs: Principles and Initial Results in Languedoc-Roussillon (France), 2009.
Introduction - The RésIST network brings together clinicians who volunteer to report cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and anogenital lymphogranuloma to the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance. Since 2008, the Languedoc-Roussillon Interregional Epidemiology Unit (Cire) has been coordinating this surveillance at the regional level. Method - The regional coordination procedures are described, along with the priority targets for communication. Data on reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are described and compared with data from the years preceding the regionalization of surveillance. Results - In 2009, participation in the network increased significantly among screening centers. Data were provided by 11 reporting entities (screening centers, hospitals, and private practitioners), compared to fewer than 5 in 2007 and 2008. A diversification of reported STIs was observed, while the number of syphilis cases stabilized. Conclusion - These results suggest a positive impact of the regionalization of this surveillance, with a doubling of participation and a diversification of reported conditions. Improved understanding of regional dynamics allows for better targeting of public health priorities in the region. (R.A.)
