Characteristics of victims of domestic violence who sought care at Toulouse University Hospital in 2013. A comparative study.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of victims of domestic violence when they presented to an emergency department, in order to improve their medical and forensic care. Materials and Methods: As part of a retrospective comparative study, we collected data on patients who presented to emergency departments in Toulouse in 2013 due to a fight or assault. We formed and compared two groups of patients: victims of domestic violence and victims of other types of violence. Patient characteristics, details of the assault, and care provided were recorded. Results: Victims of domestic violence were less likely to present with signs of clinical severity (23.3% vs. 47.6%, p<0.001) and were less likely to undergo imaging studies (37% vs. 56.1%, p<0.01) than victims of other types of violence. Victims of domestic violence were more likely to be referred to the forensic medicine department after their visit to the emergency department than victims of other types of violence (69.9% vs. 29.6%, p<0.01). Discussion: In this study, victims of domestic violence did not seek care in the emergency department solely because of the severity of their initial injuries. They also sought care in the forensic medicine department more frequently than victims of other types of violence, which may indicate better information provision in the emergency department.
