Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 27, 2016.

Key Points

Mortality: In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, as at the national level, the number of deaths recorded during week 41 of 2016 follows the usual seasonal trend in mortality for this period, across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: continued increase in emergency department visits among those aged 75 and older, with figures above the alert threshold in week 42 of 2016, with no specific conditions identified; activity remained stable, close to expected levels for this time of year among children under 1 year of age.

Virology: Among the 38 samples positive for respiratory viruses from the laboratories at the Bordeaux and Poitiers university hospitals, 35 were positive for rhinovirus (10 in Bordeaux and 25 in Poitiers), 1 for enterovirus (in Bordeaux), 3 for parainfluenza (2 in Bordeaux, 1 in Poitiers), and 2 for adenovirus (in Poitiers). Five cerebrospinal fluid samples positive for enterovirus were reported (including 4 in Bordeaux), and 2 emergency department visits for enterovirus meningitis were recorded in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Gastroenteritis: In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, activity remains high, above the epidemic threshold for the 8th consecutive week for SOS Médecins consultations, accounting for 10.4% of total activity, stable compared to the previous week. Activity is stable, below the alert threshold, for emergency department visits. The trend is the same at the national level.

Bronchiolitis: activity is stable, close to expected levels for this time of year according to data from the Oscour® and SOS Médecins networks. The AquiRespi network treated 31 children. Indicators continue to rise at the national level.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: indicators at baseline levels.

Asthma: activity slightly increased among children under 15 according to SOS Médecins data and decreased according to Oscour®, with activity comparable to previous years during the same period. The same trend is observed at the national level.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance as of 10/20/2016: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the five departments of the former Aquitaine region colonized by Aedes albopictus, 186 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 23 cases of dengue, 57 cases of Zika, and 1 dengue/Zika co-infection—all imported—have been confirmed. One case of Zika transmitted sexually has been confirmed. There are no cases of indigenous vector-borne transmission.

Notifiable diseases (NDs): no unusual events involving NDs in the region during week 42.
