Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 22, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Following the increase in mortality observed during January, the decline continued in week 10 (currently consolidating), with observed figures close to expected levels.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity remains stable among children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older, with figures close to those expected for this time of year.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus test results from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals increased from 67 to 86 in week 11.At the Poitiers University Hospital, of the 42 positive samples, the majority were for rhinovirus/enterovirus (11 samples), metapneumovirus (9), and RSV (5). At the Bordeaux University Hospital, of the 16 positive samples, the majority were for RSV (7) and metapneumovirus (6). In Limoges, 5 respiratory samples were positive, including 3 for rhinovirus/enterovirus.

Gastroenteritis: activity is stable or declining according to SOS Médecins and Oscour® data, with values below the alert thresholds for both data sources.

Bronchiolitis: indicators for bronchiolitis monitoring in hospital and outpatient settings continue to decline and are at levels expected for this time of year. The number of cases managed by the AquiRespi network during the last on-call period was 44, remaining stable compared to the previous week. Nationally, the 2016-17 bronchiolitis epidemic in metropolitan France was comparable to that of 2015-16 but more severe than that of 2014-15. The epidemic peak was reached nationally in week 50 of 2016 and was surpassed in all metropolitan regions in week 2 of 2017.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: end of the epidemic for the NA region, with low influenza activity in hospital emergency departments and for SOS Médecins, with values below the alert thresholds. No new severe cases of influenza were reported in week 11 of 2017; the total number of severe influenza cases stands at 85 since November 1, 2016, including 17 deaths. A new cluster of acute respiratory infections (ARI) has been reported in a long-term care facility since the beginning of week 11 of 2017. Nationally, most indicators have returned to baseline levels, and influenza virus circulation remains low.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): no unusual events in the region during week 10 of 2017. Of note are two cases of measles hospitalized at the Limoges University Hospital.
