Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 21, 2016.

Mortality: After briefly exceeding the alert thresholds in week 52, the number of deaths declined, returning to levels in week 01 that are close to those expected for this time of year.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency room activity for children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older remains below the alert threshold, close to the expected levels for this time of year.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations have been observed since early January 2016.

Carbon monoxide poisoningSince September 1, 2015, 22 incidents have been reported in Aquitaine, including 10 related to boilers/water heaters, 3 to the use of barbecues/fire pits, and 4 to generators. In total, 44 people had to be transported to the emergency room.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG) In Aquitaine, significant epidemic activity with the epidemic threshold exceeded for SOS Médecins consultations. Moderate activity and within expected ranges for emergency room visits. In nursing homes, 16 cluster cases reported over the past 3 weeks. In France, sustained activity on the rise, mainly among children, but overall lower than in previous years.

Influenza: Influenza activity remains low in Aquitaine, as in all regions of mainland France. In Europe, activity is low or moderate depending on the country. In Aquitaine, there were no severe cases of influenza and 2 clustered cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI) in week 02-2016.

Bronchiolitis: The decline in epidemic activity continues, with activity below the alert thresholds for SOS Médecins and Oscour®, accounting for 4.1% of procedures and 10.9% of visits, respectively, among children under 2 years of age. The number of cases managed by AquiRespi remained relatively stable (86 vs. 97 the previous week). However, RSV continues to circulate, with nearly 40% of respiratory virus tests returning positive results. Data from Oscour® and SOS Médecins recorded at the start of week 03 also show a slight resurgence in activity (to be confirmed next week).

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis Three reports of enterovirus meningitis according to the Bordeaux University Hospital laboratory and none according to the Oscour® network. Among the 36 positive respiratory virus tests, 9 were rhinoviruses and 14 were RSV. One sample tested positive for influenza.

Chickenpox: Activity has continued to decline for two consecutive weeks, with figures close to expected levels.
