Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of August 27, 2015.
Mortality: The number of deaths recorded in the third quarter of 2015 is below expected levels.
Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: According to available data, emergency room activity for children under 1 year of age is close to expected levels. Emergency room activity for those aged 75 and older remains in line with expectations.
Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance in Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne Since May 1, 84 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 1 imported case of dengue and 3 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. In total, as of August 21, in the 20 metropolitan departments subject to enhanced surveillance, 57 imported cases of dengue and 17 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. Two locally acquired cases of dengue have been confirmed in Nîmes (Hérault department, Languedoc-Roussillon region).
Notifiable Diseases (ND)Note: 3 cases of hepatitis A have been reported since the beginning of the month in the same area of the Dordogne.
Acute Gastroenteritis (AG)Activity is stable in Aquitaine, in line with expected levels for this time of year. Nationally, activity is slightly higher, according to SOS Médecins, with levels comparable to previous years.
Asthma and allergiesIn Aquitaine, asthma activity is slightly increasing. An increase in allergies has been observed according to SOS Médecins (2.5% compared to 2% the previous week). Forecast for this week: very low pollen allergy risk for grass pollen in the region.
Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: The number of enterovirus meningitis cases (1 from the university hospital’s virology lab and 1 from Oscour®) is decreasing.
Heat-related illnessesIn Aquitaine, activity remains stable, with 0.3% of cases handled by SOS Médecins and 0.4% of emergency room visits through the Oscour® network. No heat wave is forecast by Météo France as of August 27, 2015.
Mushroom poisoningSince the start of surveillance on 06/29/15, 24 cases of mushroom poisoning—including 11 in week 34—have been recorded by CAP-TV, and 10 emergency room visits within the Oscour® network—including 5 at the start of week 35.
