Public Health Bulletin on Tuberculosis in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. March 2022.

Key Points

Tuberculosis

  • In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the reported rate was lower in 2020 compared to 2019 and remained well below the national average, with 4.0 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants (compared to 6.9 per 100,000 inhabitants in metropolitan France).

  • The reported rate was nearly twice as high among men as among women, as in previous years.

  • More than a quarter of tuberculosis cases were among people aged 25 to 39, and less than 1% were children under 5 years of age.

  • The tuberculosis reporting rate among people born abroad had been trending upward for several years, particularly among those born in sub-Saharan Africa. Among cases born abroad, the proportion of cases who had arrived in France less than two years prior was declining in 2022 compared to previous years.

  • The proportion of people living in group settings was declining in 2020, as was the proportion of people without a stable residence.

  • More than three-quarters of cases presented with pulmonary tuberculosis, as in previous years. • Disparities were observed between departments, with the highest reported rates in Pyrénées-Atlantiques (5.6 per 100,000 inhabitants), Haute-Vienne (5.5 per 100,000 inhabitants), and Gironde (5.0 per 100,000 inhabitants) for 2020.

Treatment Outcome

  • Information on treatment outcomes for cases reported between 2016 and 2018 was available for less than 20% of cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (compared to 65% in 2015).

  • The percentage of cases reported during the 2015–2018 period that completed treatment was 79%. The World Health Organization (WHO) target of 90% has therefore not been met.
