Public Health Bulletin on Alcohol in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. January 2020.
Key Points
In 2017, 12.3% of adults aged 18 to 75 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region reported drinking alcohol daily, and 45.3% reported drinking weekly (frequencies significantly higher than the averages for metropolitan France).
Alcohol consumption was higher among men: 19% reported drinking daily, compared to 6% of women, and 57.8% reported drinking weekly, compared to 33.4% of women.
The region was among those with the highest rates of alcohol consumption among 17-year-olds, whether in terms of experimentation, regular use, or occasional heavy drinking.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region was the second region with the highest prevalence of weekly wine consumption among adults aged 18 to 75 (34.8%).
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region had incidence and mortality rates at or below the average for metropolitan France for alcohol-related cancers (lip, mouth, and pharynx; esophagus; larynx), as well as a cumulative mortality rate associated with the main alcohol-related diseases that was also below the average for metropolitan France. However, significant disparities were observed between departments, with Creuse presenting the most concerning situations.
