Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 20, 2016.

Key Points

Mortality: The number of deaths recorded in week 40 of 2016, for all ages and for those aged 75 and older, remains close to expected levels for this time of year in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and nationwide.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: an increase in emergency department visits among those aged 75 and older, with figures close to the alert threshold and no specific pathologies identified; activity remains stable, close to expected levels for this time of year among children under 1 year of age.

Virology: Among the 52 samples testing positive for respiratory viruses from the laboratories at the Bordeaux and Poitiers university hospitals, 42 were positive for rhinovirus (20 in Bordeaux and 23 in Poitiers), 1 for RSV (in Bordeaux), 1 for parainfluenza (in Bordeaux), and 5 for coronavirus. Six cerebrospinal fluid samples positive for enterovirus were reported (5 in Bordeaux), and 5 emergency department visits for enterovirus meningitis were recorded in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Gastroenteritis: In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, activity remains high, above the epidemic threshold for the 7th consecutive week for SOS Médecins consultations, accounting for 10% of total activity. Activity is slightly up, below the alert threshold, for emergency department visits. The trend is the same at the national level.

Bronchiolitis: activity is stable, close to expected levels for this time of year according to data from the Oscour® and SOS Médecins networks. One positive RSV test at Bordeaux University Hospital. Twenty-four children treated by the AquiRespi network. All indicators are rising at the national level.

Flu and flu-like illnesses: Indicators at baseline levels.

Asthma: Activity slightly increased according to SOS Médecins data and stable according to Oscour®. Nationally, asthma activity is decreasing.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance as of 10/20/2016: Since May 1, the start of enhanced surveillance in the five departments of the former Aquitaine region colonized by Aedes albopictus, 183 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 22 cases of dengue, 57 cases of Zika, and 1 dengue/Zika co-infection—all imported—have been confirmed. One case of Zika transmitted sexually has been confirmed. There are no cases of indigenous vector-borne transmission.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): no unusual events involving notifiable diseases in the region during week 41.
