Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of November 10, 2016.

Key Points

Mortality: The number of deaths, for all ages and those aged 75 and older, recorded during week 43 of 2016 follows the usual seasonal trend in mortality for this period.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: a decrease in emergency department visits among those aged 75 and older, with figures falling below the alert threshold; activity remains stable but high for children under 1 year of age.

Virology: Among the 50 positive samples for respiratory viruses from the laboratories at the Bordeaux and Poitiers University Hospitals, the majority tested positive for rhinovirus (16 in Bordeaux and 16 in Poitiers). Three influenza A viruses (in Poitiers) and three respiratory syncytial viruses (one in Bordeaux and two in Poitiers) were also detected.

Gastroenteritis: Activity is declining but remains significant, above the epidemic threshold for SOS Médecins consultations, accounting for 8.6% of total activity. Activity is stable, below the alert threshold, for emergency department visits. The trend is the same at the national level.

Bronchiolitis: activity in the Oscour® and SOS Médecins networks is stable compared to the previous week, with values close to those expected for this time of year. The AquiRespi network treated 38 children during the last on-call period (November 5 and 6). Indicators are stable at the national level, and two regions (Ile-de-France and PACA) are in the pre-epidemic phase.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: slight increase in influenza activity compared to the previous week, as observed at the national level.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance as of November 3, 2016: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the five departments of the former Aquitaine region colonized by Aedes albopictus, 187 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 25 cases of dengue, 58 cases of Zika, and 1 dengue/Zika co-infection—all imported—have been confirmed. One case of Zika transmitted sexually has been confirmed. There are no cases of local vector-borne transmission.

Notifiable diseases (NDs): no unusual events in the region during week 44.
