Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 5, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Mortality during week 25 (June 19–25, 2017) is comparable to expected levels for this period across all age groups. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Activity in emergency departments among people aged 75 and older and those under 1 year of age remains close to what is expected for this period.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the Bordeaux and Poitiers University Hospital laboratories remained stable in week 26 (31 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux University Hospitals, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (7 and 12 samples, respectively). No samples were positive at the Limoges University Hospital.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): The increase in reported cases of hepatitis A among the male population has continued since the beginning of 2017 in the region. Epidemic strains of the hepatitis A virus circulating among MSM in other regions have been detected in cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Measles data show a significant decline in reported measles cases in June. However, the circulation of the virus in the region cannot be ruled out, given that reporting is not 100% comprehensive and that visits to emergency departments for measles have been reported in many departments across the region.

Allergies: Allergy activity monitored by the SOS Médecins associations continues to decline in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The allergy risk associated with grass pollen remains very high in the departments of the former Limousin region and moderate to high in the rest of the region.

Chickenpox: Chickenpox activity, according to SOS Médecins data, remains close to the expected seasonal level.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced Surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: Since May 1, the start of enhanced surveillance in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus, 30 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 2 cases of dengue have been confirmed.

Heat-related illnesses (HRI) Activity has returned to typical levels for this time of year in both networks (Oscour and SOS Médecins) in line with the drop in temperatures. No heat wave is forecast in Nouvelle-Aquitaine over the next 5 days, according to Météo France.
