Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 12, 2017.
Key Points
Mortality: Mortality during week 26 (June 26–July 2, 2017) is comparable to expected levels for this period across all age groups. The trend is the same at the national level.
Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity among people aged 75 and older and those under 1 year of age remains close to what is expected for this period.
Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the Bordeaux and Poitiers University Hospitals remained stable in week 27 (33 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux University Hospitals, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (12 and 9 samples, respectively). No samples were positive at the Limoges University Hospital.
Notifiable Diseases (ND): Continued increase in hepatitis A reports among the male population since the beginning of 2017 in the region. Epidemic strains of the hepatitis A virus circulating among MSM in other regions have been detected in cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Measles data show a significant decline in reported measles cases in June/July. However, the circulation of the virus in the region cannot be ruled out, given that reporting is not 100% comprehensive and that visits to emergency departments for measles have been reported in several departments of the region (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, Haute-Vienne).
Allergies: Allergy activity observed by SOS Médecins associations is slightly higher in week 27 in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The allergy risk associated with grass pollen remains high in the departments of Creuse, Corrèze, and Haute-Vienne and moderate for the rest of the region.
Chickenpox: Chickenpox activity, according to SOS Médecins data, remains close to the expected seasonal level.
Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus (Gironde, Dordogne, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques), 30 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 2 cases of dengue have been confirmed.
Heat-related illnesses (HRI): Activity remains at typical levels for this time of year in both networks (Oscour and SOS Médecins) due to the drop in temperatures. No heat wave is expected in Nouvelle-Aquitaine over the next 5 days, according to Météo France.
