Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 17, 2015.

Mortality: Nationwide, an excess of approximately 700 deaths was estimated for the week of June 29 to July 5, 2015. Eighty percent of this excess was concentrated in nine metropolitan regions, and no excess mortality was observed in 15 regions during the same period.During week 27, the Aquitaine region did not observe any excess deaths, even though some departments in the region were affected by the heat wave.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populationsAccording to available data, emergency room activity for those aged 75 and older is in line with expectations. Emergency room activity for children under 1 year of age is slightly down but remains close to the alert threshold.

Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance in Gironde and Lot-et-GaronneSince May 1, 44 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 1 imported case of dengue and 3 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. In total, as of July 10, in the 20 metropolitan departments subject to enhanced surveillance, 295 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 26 imported cases of dengue and 11 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. There are no locally acquired cases.

Notifiable Diseases (ND) No unusual situation this week.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG) Moderate activity in Aquitaine with a continued increase in emergency room visits among children (under 15 years of age).

Asthma and allergiesIn Aquitaine, asthma consultations are stable, while allergy-related activity remains high according to Oscour® and SOS Médecins. Forecast for this week: moderate pollen allergy risk for grass pollen in the region.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: A high number of enterovirus meningitis cases (11 virology reports from the University Hospital and 9 from Oscour®), consistent with national trends.

ChickenpoxIn Aquitaine, chickenpox activity is in line with expected levels for this time of year.

Heat-related illnessesIn Aquitaine, following the sharp rise in heat-related illness monitoring indicators observed in Week 27 of 2015, a slight decline began in Week 28 of 2015, dropping from 1.8% to 1.6% of total SOS Médecins activity and from 1.3% to 0.8% of total Oscour® network activity. A Yellow heat wave alert is expected for the departments of Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne due to a temporary heat spike on July 16, 2015.
