Impact of Vaccination on the Dynamics of the COVID-19 Outbreak Among People Aged 75 and Older in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, January–March 2021
Introduction - Older adults, who have been disproportionately affected by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, have been a priority target of the vaccination strategy implemented in France since early 2021. The observation of a decline in indicators among this population in Nouvelle-Aquitaine since mid-February suggested an effect of the vaccination campaigns carried out in nursing homes (Ehpad) in the region. Method - A comparison of indicators (incidence rates and vaccination coverage) between older adults and other age groups, which were not prioritized for vaccination, was conducted using the SI-DEP virological surveillance system (screening information system) and vaccination coverage data from Vaccin Covid, from January 1 to March 21, 2021. Changes in indicators among older adults according to their type of care setting were also described. Results - An improvement in epidemiological indicators among people aged 75 and older has been observed since mid-February 2021, in parallel with the increase in vaccination coverage in this population. This improvement is particularly marked among residents in nursing homes, in line with the vaccination strategy implemented. Conclusion - The dynamics of the epidemic observed among older adults, compared to other age groups, suggest that COVID-19 vaccination has had an impact on SARS-CoV-2 viral circulation among people aged 75 and older, particularly among nursing home residents, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
