Bordeaux, MARAdJA, Oncology: Helping young patients reconnect with their bodies—which have been weakened by illness and treatment—by rediscovering the joy of movement [Interview].
Since 2013, MARADjA in Bordeaux has been an interdisciplinary center providing supportive care for adolescents and young adults (AJA) undergoing cancer treatment. This support is offered during and, above all, after their specific treatments. The goal is to promote their well-being by offering psychosocial support and a space for relaxation and recreation. The strength of the Maradja team (health mediator, psychologist, socio-aesthetician, adapted physical activity instructors—APA—and academic support professionals) lies in an ethic of “care”—a daily concern for others, listening, providing support, and building relationships. Physical activity is a cornerstone of this approach: through exercise, patients notice that they regain muscle tone and overall fitness. They regain their self-confidence. A complementary component consists of workshops led by the socio-aesthetician focusing on makeup and body art. At this age, working on one’s body is essential.
