Substance Use Among Hospitalized Patients in Normandy in 2020

The ARS Normandy has asked the regional office of Santé publique France Normandy to estimate the prevalence of addictive behaviors among individuals who, for whatever reason, seek care in the region’s hospitals. Indeed, addiction treatment requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, as the goal is to intervene as early as possible to limit, or even prevent, the consequences of addictive behaviors. Understanding the burden of addictive behaviors among patients in Normandy aims to adapt the identification and management of patients, as well as the working conditions of healthcare professionals. The survey was conducted in 40 healthcare facilities in Normandy out of 50 that were contacted, over a one-week period in February 2020. It yielded 6,381 completed questionnaires. At the conclusion of this study, which described the profiles of patients admitted to healthcare settings regarding addictive behaviors, it is evident that these risky behaviors are prevalent in this population. Compared to the general population, the prevalence of daily alcohol and cannabis use appears higher in the study population. It therefore seems appropriate to allocate resources within hospitals to address these addictions. In terms of characterizing risk profiles, the prevalence of addictions is higher among men, people aged 45 to 54, the unemployed, and patients admitted to psychiatric units. Identifying these risk profiles is crucial for developing targeted prevention strategies and adapting intervention tools. Regardless of the population concerned, addictive behaviors represent a major issue due to the health and social consequences associated with them. A precise understanding of their prevalence in healthcare settings is essential to estimate healthcare needs in this area and respond to them appropriately. The improved understanding of the profiles of substance users in hospital settings provided by this study can help improve identification and care. Similarly, the presence of these individuals prone to addictive behaviors in hospital settings presents a favorable opportunity to initiate care.
