A descriptive study of leptospirosis cases diagnosed in Normandy between 2010 and 2014
In Lower Normandy, the incidence rate of leptospirosis was six times higher than the national average during the 2006–2012 period. In 2012, Lower Normandy ranked fourth among mainland regions most affected by leptospirosis in terms of incidence rate. In this context, the Lower Normandy regional unit of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) (Cire) Normandy conducted a retrospective descriptive study to characterize cases of leptospirosis diagnosed in Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy during the 2010–2014 period and to assess the relevance of implementing specific surveillance and prevention measures. The observations made in this study regarding case characteristics and risk exposures were largely consistent with those described in the literature and observed at the national level. Considering the results of this study and that conducted by Cire Aquitaine over the 2004–2006 period, Cire Normandy did not recommend the implementation of a surveillance system. Regarding preventive measures, Cire Normandie proposed (i) raising awareness among individuals likely to engage in recreational and/or occupational activities at risk for leptospirosis and (ii) raising awareness among healthcare professionals regarding the context of leptospirosis in Normandy to facilitate the diagnosis of this disease and promote rapid and appropriate management of cases.
