Summary of the summer health surveillance in Normandy. Update as of November 10, 2016.

The summer of 2016 in Normandy was marked by two heat waves (in mid-July and then in late August), the second of which was unusual due to its late timing. The heat wave alert level (orange) was not reached in the departments of Normandy. The heat advisory level (yellow) was issued for periods ranging from 2 to 7 days, depending on the department.

The health impact in terms of emergency care utilization was significant in the region, particularly following the first heat episode (76 visits to emergency departments and 31 consultations at SOS Médecins possibly related to the heat over 3 days). The impact on mortality remained low and non-significant for this heat episode.

However, in Normandy, an increase in health indicators possibly linked to the heat was observed outside the context of the yellow alert, highlighting that health effects are likely to occur under unusual weather conditions associated with high temperatures.
