Cardiovascular and Neurological Diseases in Normandy. Bulletin of June 30, 2025.

Key Points

In Normandy, the incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates for ischemic heart disease, stroke, and heart failure are generally higher than those for France:

  • The age-standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for ischemic heart disease was similar to that of France (458 vs. 459 per 100,000 population), with an average of 12,620 patients hospitalized annually in the region between 2021 and 2023. The standardized prevalence was higher than that of France (6.1% vs. 5.5%) in 2022. The standardized mortality rate (2020–2022) was higher in the region compared to the national rate (71 vs. 59 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • For heart failure, the standardized incidence rate of hospitalized patients was higher than that of France (410 vs. 344 per 100,000 inhabitants), with an average of 11,513 patients hospitalized per year. The standardized prevalence was comparable to that of France (2.8% vs. 2.5%). The standardized mortality rate was slightly higher in the region compared to France (52 vs. 46 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • For strokes, the standardized incidence rate of hospitalized patients was higher than that of France (241 vs. 231 per 100,000 inhabitants), with an average of 6,673 patients hospitalized per year. The standardized prevalence was comparable to the national prevalence (2.1% vs. 2.0%). The standardized mortality rate was higher than that of France (62 vs. 58 per 100,000 inhabitants).

At the subregional level, there were few differences between departments, with the exception of Calvados, which had higher incidence and prevalence rates for ischemic heart disease than the rest of the region. At the subdepartmental level, several EPCIs in Seine-Maritime had higher prevalence and mortality rates for stroke.
