Regional School Epidemiology Observatory: Student Health in Upper Normandy, 2006–2007 School Year
Understanding the health of young people is a key concern for public authorities. It is therefore necessary to develop tools within the National Education System to better understand the health issues affecting the school-age population and to ensure more effective monitoring of the initiatives implemented. In the Haute-Normandie region, the Rouen Regional Education Office and the Haute-Normandie Regional Directorate of Health and Social Affairs (DRASS) have taken this initiative by entrusting the Regional Health Observatory (ORS) with the establishment of a Regional School Epidemiology Observatory (ORES) to create a reproducible database of information on the health of children and adolescents within the school system. During the Ores’ first year of operation, data collection was conducted on a representative sample of over 2,000 seventh-grade students and covered numerous research topics (lifestyle and hygiene, overweight, addictive behaviors, etc.). These results, the fruit of significant collaboration and hard work among the various partners, mark the starting point of a program intended to be long-term. Future annual surveys conducted among other grade levels (ninth grade and kindergarten) will indeed enrich public authorities’ understanding of the health status of young people in Upper Normandy in the years to come.
