COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of March 18, 2021

Key Points

In Week 10 (March 8–14, 2021), all epidemiological indicators, already at high levels, were on the rise. This reflects a further acceleration in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the Île-de-France region.

The increase in cases across all age groups and in all departments of the Île-de-France region continued to place strain on the hospital system, which has reached a critical level in the region. This situation arose against a backdrop where variants of concern—suspected to be more transmissible and potentially responsible for more severe infections—now constitute the vast majority of cases.

The improvement in the incidence rate among those aged 75 and older in the general population, as well as a decline in the number of reported COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents observed since Week 08, appears to reflect the protective effect of vaccination in the elderly population.

All-cause mortality remained at a high level, and moderate but sustained excess mortality was observed for the seventh consecutive week. The number of hospital deaths among COVID-19 patients, meanwhile, was slightly down.

In Île-de-France as of March 16, 2021, single-dose vaccination coverage stood at 6.8% in the general population (vs. 5.0% in Week 9), at 46.6% among those aged 75 and older (vs. 36.8% in Week 9), and at 90.3% specifically among residents of long-term care facilities (vs. 86.7% in Week 9).
