COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of July 29, 2021
Key Points
In Week 29, epidemiological indicators pointed to a continued deterioration of the situation, with an increase in SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the Île-de-France region. The rise in the number of people testing positive occurred against a backdrop of a sharp increase in the detection of the Delta variant and a decline in public adherence to preventive measures, while vaccination coverage remains incomplete.
In Île-de-France, the regional incidence rate for week 29 rose for the fourth consecutive week, reaching 180 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This increase was particularly pronounced among people aged 15 to 29. While the testing rate also increased, the positivity rate—up for the third consecutive week—also reflected an increase in viral circulation in the region.
Hospital indicators for new hospitalizations and new admissions to critical care units were also on the rise in Week 29, reflecting the impact on hospitals of the increase in the number of new cases in recent weeks. The number of reported deaths in hospitals among COVID-19 patients increased for the first time since the resurgence of the epidemic observed in Week 26.
As of July 25, 59.4% of the Île-de-France population of all ages had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 49.5% were fully vaccinated. Growth in single-dose vaccination coverage remained low among people aged 50 and older.
Against the backdrop of a resurgence of the epidemic, widespread transmission of the Delta variant, and summer vacations, vaccination of all eligible individuals must be strongly encouraged. It is also essential to maintain a high level of adherence to preventive measures, particularly compliance with protective measures, limiting high-risk contacts, and self-isolation in the event of symptoms, a confirmed infection, or contact with a confirmed case.
