COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of December 16, 2021

Key Points

  • The crude incidence rate rose for the sixth consecutive week, reaching 505 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This increase was observed across all departments in the Île-de-France region and among people under the age of 65. Paris had the highest incidence rate among all departments in the Île-de-France region at 659 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, higher than the peak of the second wave.

  • The positivity rate continued to rise in some departments, while it stabilized in others. The testing rate showed varying degrees of increase across all departments in the Île-de-France region.

  • As of December 15, 2021, 110 cases of the Omicron variant (21K, B.1.1.529) had been confirmed in the region.

  • SI-VIC data showed an increase in new hospitalizations, new ICU admissions, and new deaths reported in hospitals.

  • An uptick in reported COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities (ESMS) had been observed since Week 46, but the situation remained, at this stage, generally favorable (high vaccination coverage in nursing homes).

  • Vaccination coverage with at least one dose was 73.5%, 72.4% for the full course, and 19.5% for the full booster dose. The rate of increase in vaccination coverage remained low.

Given the high and still-rising viral circulation, vaccinating all eligible individuals remains essential and must be combined with high adherence to other preventive measures.
