Tuberculosis in Paris in 2016: A Turning Point?

The Paris Tuberculosis Control Center (CLAT 75) has a dual responsibility: epidemiological and operational. It is tasked with providing the Regional Health Agency (ARS) with annual data on tuberculosis cases residing in Paris and with combating tuberculosis through various strategies implemented to reduce its incidence. In 2016, a 15% increase in the incidence of tuberculosis was observed in Paris; the number of cases thus rose from 323 in 2015 to 372 in 2016. This trend continued in 2017 (403 cases). It is primarily due to an increase in the number of tuberculosis cases among people from sub-Saharan Africa, mainly young men who have recently arrived in France and, in some cases, are living in precarious conditions. CLAT 75’s activities primarily consist of conducting investigations into tuberculosis cases: in 2016, 350 investigations were carried out into Parisian index cases, leading to the diagnosis of 219 latent tuberculosis infections and 6 active tuberculosis cases. Radiological screening tailored to at-risk populations has also been implemented.
