The Seine-Saint-Denis Tuberculosis Control Center: Activities 2013–2015

In 2015, Seine-Saint-Denis had the highest tuberculosis incidence rate in metropolitan France, at 24.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Since 2015, the Tuberculosis Control Center (CLAT) of the Seine-Saint-Denis department has consisted of an alert unit and three departmental health prevention centers (CDPS). The results presented concern the screening of contacts of tuberculosis cases reported in this department and active screening during the 2013–2015 period. The CLAT has met its screening targets for contacts of index cases, and the widespread implementation of the 2013 recommendations is expected to result in an increase in the rate of tuberculosis detected among contacts (0.94% over the period). Between 2013 and 2015, 89 secondary tuberculosis cases were diagnosed among 58 index cases, and 1,436 latent tuberculosis infections were identified among 576 index cases. The strategy of active screening targeting populations at highest risk for tuberculosis appears effective, with high detection rates (339 out of 105 chest X-rays). While the collected data allow for analysis of index case characteristics, the CLAT must continue to improve the collection of information on contacts. The creation of a centralized alert unit should also contribute to improving the quality of data collection.
